Threads in Time
– From the National Tapestries to the Royal Tapestry

The Paris World’s Fair opened in an atmosphere of buoyant optimism in the spring of 1900. Europe stood on the threshold of a new century, and people were filled with enthusiasm and anticipation about the potential of new technology. Electric lights had already begun to illuminate city streets, railways were connecting cities more closely, and the telephone was revolutionising communication. Europe’s technological, scientific, and cultural achievements were proudly presented to the Fair’s visitors, and the future seemed boundlessly bright. A new type of modernity was emerging alongside this technological optimism. As a counterbalance to the harsh conditions of industrialised life, people turned their attention inward—towards the human psyche, the organic, and the intimate world of the home. This shift is expressed in one of the highlights of the Fair: tapestry. Many artists returned to a craft tradition with deep historical roots that drew inspiration from the Middle Ages as well as from ancient legends
and folktales.

The renewed interest in weaving at the turn of the previous century is closely linked to the English Arts and Crafts movement. William Morris, one of its founders, idealised medieval aesthetics and production methods as a counterweight to industrial mass production. His ideas resonated strongly in Norway, where the Middle Ages were regarded as a national golden age—a time when the country was an independent kingdom with significant political power and a rich cultural heritage. Leading this artistic renewal were figures such as Frida Hansen and Gerhard Munthe, who established textile art as a key vehicle for expressing national identity and reimagining the aesthetics of the Norwegian Middle Ages, with the addition of international trends and ideas. Together, they exhibited two monumental works at the 1900 World’s Fair—Sigurd and Baldwin and Entry into Myklagard. Celebrated as national treasures, the tapestries were renamed the National Tapestries (Riksteppene) and were later purchased for the Royal Palace.

The exhibition Threads in Time—from the National Tapestries to the Royal Tapestry presents a selection of tapestries from the Royal Collections that spans the period from the renaissance of tapestry weaving in Norway in the 1890s to the years following the Second World War, after peace had been restored. These works—acquired both as gifts and as purchases—primarily hang in the Royal Palace and the Royal Lodge (Kongsseteren). Each tapestry offers a woven narrative of identity, international influence, and royal patronage.

AVTT/PTTN

Cover art and album design by Martin Kvamme.
Inside gatefold photo by Halvor Bodin.

The debut album from AVTT/PTTN, a collaboration between The Avett Brothers and Mike Patton. The album is being released on Thirty Tigers in association with Ipecac Recordings and Ramseur Recordings. The Ipecac Bandcamp store and webstores have an exclusive vinyl variant with alternate artwork.

In 2019, Scott Avett and Mike Patton began communicating after Avett mentioned his admiration of Patton in an interview which caught the eye of Patton's management team. Patton told Avett the door was open for collaboration should Avett ever be interested. A year or so later, Avett sent some song demos to Patton that blew him away. The trading of songs and sounds continued between The Avett Brothers and Mike Patton until several years later, they had a full album of songs—and AVTT/PTTN was born.

AVTT/PTTN is Scott Avett, Seth Avett, and Mike Patton.
All songs written and performed by AVTT/PTTN except Ox Driving Song (traditional. Produced by Mike Patton, Scott Avett, and Dana Nielsen. Engineered and Mixed by Dana Nielsen. Additional performances by Mickey Raphael, harmonica and bass harmonica on Dark Night of My Soul. I did the photograph used inside the gatefold on vinyl and CD as well as the backdrop photographs for live TV when AVTT/PTTN played CBS Saturday Sessions 251206. The artwork with photocollages and the cover design is done by Martin Kvamme.

The photographs are from Moutmarka in Færder National Park, Norway where I have lived and worked for the last ten years. Færder National Park is a distinctive archipelago landscape in the outer Oslo Fjord that is the result of the work carried out by the enormous ice masses from the Ice Age.

The pictures are shot close to local well named points of interest Verdens Ende (World’s End) and Faenshølet (Devils/Damn Hole).

Mellom kunst og gravsteiner

– En fortelling om SA Steinskulptur

Between the Tube tracks and Østensjøveien, opposite Østre Gravlund in Oslo, lies a small firm with a big story to tell. Since 1948, Steinskulptur has been the place where artists and stonemasons meet – to shape sorrow into remembrance and ideas into sculpture. From here, memorials have risen across the whole country, and works in Norwegian stone have found their way as far as Cleveland and Philadelphia.

Espen Hauglid offers a vivid account of the artists’ own enterprise: from the post-war collective need for monuments, via radical gravestones exhibited at Kunstnernes Hus, to conflicts and restructuring for a new era.

We meet the people, the craft and the politics behind the monoliths – and follow the business from Helsfyr to the plans for a new centre of knowledge for sculpture. Between art and gravestones, the book finds an unexpected tension: the struggle for the material, for the memories – and for ensuring that art can still be carved here at home.

Wongraven Barbaresco a Silvana 2021

Wongraven Barbaresco Silvana is made from organically grown Nebbiolo from two vineyards in Barbaresco, as a tribute to Silvana – a close friend of Wongraven Wines, known for her hospitality and warmth. It is spontaneously fermented with natural yeast, matured for two years in a single neutral 500-litre cask, unfiltered and unfined, before further bottle ageing. The result is a classic Nebbiolo with precise fruit, lifted freshness, ripe tannins, and a long finish.

Kristian Blystad

Known for his distinctive monumental works in stone, such as Torso (1999) in the former government quarter, Reclining Head II – Dream at Filipstad Brygge (1999), and The Sailing King (1993), a monument in memory of King Olav V at Hankø. He played a significant role in collaboration with Snøhetta on architectural projects such as the Bibliotheca Alexandrina and the Oslo Opera House roof.

The book covers Blystad’s entire oeuvre, from his early years in Bergen, through exhibitions and acquisitions in the 1990s and 2000s, up to his current creative practice in the quarry at Skjeberg, Østfold.

The book Kristian Blystad is among the selected 23 books for The Most Beautiful Norwegian Books 2025 (Årets vakreste bøker). The exhibition in Oslo is open 28 May–15 June at Grafill in Oslo. Online presentation at grafill.no.

Jury’s Comment
This is a book that confidently translates the artist’s monumental visual language into book form. Its physical presence – weighty, coarse, and rich in detail – mirrors Blystad’s sculptures in a way that feels both authentic and apt. The production choices are numerous: exposed spine, multicoloured thread, milled edges, blind embossing, and foil stamping. It’s a lot, but here everything is rooted in a clear concept and executed with precision and sensitivity to the material. The typesetting is heavy and solid, yet balanced with space and rhythm. Variations in layout and excellent photographs – both of the artworks and the creative process – give the book depth and dynamism. The visual and tactile elements work together in a cohesive and carefully crafted publication that not only documents an artistic practice but also conveys it in a sensuous and physical way. A strong and solid monograph that gives Kristian Blystad’s art a dignified and lasting book format.

“In the competition books with exceptionally high quality in design, creative solutions, and choice of materials are awarded. The aim is to inspire the consistent use of design in book publishing and to highlight everyone involved in creating them.”

Juryens kommentar

Karl Erik Harr has been a beloved and popular visual artist throughout his more than 50-year-long career. With his powerful depictions of Northern Norway, as well as his delicate pen drawings for Knut Hamsun’s novels, he has secured an enduring place in art history.

Art historian Tommy Sørbø writes engagingly and insightfully about Harr’s life and artistic journey—about what it means to be both loved and criticised by the Norwegian art community.

Royal Photographers
– Snapshots from 1890 to 1990

Snapshots capture the many events of our everyday lives, from the recording of a child’s first steps, or siblings enjoying each other’s company, to a decisive moment in a skiing competition, or simply a fishing trip. The term was first used in 1860 by chemist and photographer Sir John Herschel, who wrote in The Photographic News that soon, it would be possible to take “[…] a photograph, as it were, by a snapshot – of securinga picture in a tenth of a second of time”. This proved to be true. The cameras in use by the late 19th century were smaller and easier to handle, and boasted faster shutter speeds. Continuous advances in film chemistry, such as the transition from glass negatives to less fiddly film rolls also made photography a less complicated affair. Given that it was now much easier to quickly grab one’s camera, it was all the more possible for a photographer to capture these snapshots – an event, a moment, a movement, or even a loving glance.

The timeframe covered by the Royal Photographers exhibition ranges from the reign of Queen Maud and King Haakon to that of Queen Sonja and King Harald and shows moments captured with “point-and-shoot” cameras. These photos offer us glimpses of personal moments in the lives of the Norwegian royal family. However, through the collection, the viewer can also recognise a common culture. Many of the photos portray the royals on holidays and trips, the very same moments we tend to pull our cameras out and take a few photos – they, too, depict family relationships, childhood memories, Easter holidays spent at the cabin and in the mountains, and summer days enjoyed by the sea.

The photos taken by the royal family themselves may look like those taken by any other family, yet they differ significantly. The moments they share as a family are not private, like those of other people, rather theirs become part of Norwegian history.

KHiO PÅ OSCARSHALL 2023
ET STED FOR SAMTIDSKUNST

Oscarshall at Bygdø sits like a shining monument at the entrance to Oslo
and was built between 1847–1852, following the largest building project of the
19th century in Norway: The Royal Palace. Oscarshall was not only created to fulfil the function of a pleasure palace, but it can also be interpreted as the Royal Palace’s commitment to artists and the exhibiting of contemporary art and craft. The complex is considered the main work of Danish architect Johan Henrik Nebelong (1817–1871) and is the first place in Norway to be built as
a contemporary art museum.

In keeping with this tradition, The Royal Collections is delighted to present a group exhibition in Gallery Josephine and the adjacent park, in collaboration with the department of Art and Craft at Oslo National Academy of the Arts. Ten international artists, who recently studied printmaking as part of the MFA in Material- and Medium-based Art, have conceived new artworks in our own time, to be exhibited in dialog with the historical palace.

The artists: Ben Clement, Hanna Halsebakke, Kamil Kak, Kari Kolltveit, Milton Mondal, Sally Nordström, Debangona Paul, Sigvei Ringvold, Maria Viirros, Anna Weilhartner.

FG X
Fine Grains Records 10 year anniversary 2022

Text from the OT301 website:

FG X – Fine Grains 10 year AnniversaryGenre: Electronic
Line up: Nicoba, DJ Uraki Riddim, Blanali, CAIN, Moroka.
Open: 22:00–03:00 hrs

This November, we’re celebrating 10 years of Fine Grains. Expect far-reaching polyrhythmic sounds that are true to their local scenes: from Oslo to, Aberdeen, London, Amsterdam, and beyond. Join us as we put a marker on the 10th year with a showcase of label mainstays and future collaborators.

Chilean DJ Nicoba assaulted our senses as part of his Echobox show live at Dekmantel earlier this year. As a monthly exponent of exponent of ritmos latinos on his Con:texto show, he seemed the perfect foil for a live set by Colombian producer Blanali.
The warm hypnotising electronic jams from Blanali’s Birds of Paradise EP were a personal record, testament to a producer rich in talent and experience. We are excited to have the Barcelona-based artist play live in Amsterdam for the first time.

DJ Uraki Riddim, founder and host of the Fine Grains Echobox Show was raised on a diet of rowies, battered seagull suppers and jungle – so expect a calorie-packed set of fourth world and hardcore continuum-lathered sounds.

CAIN is the artist most synonymous with the label since our inception. Having completed a triplet of EPs, each telling their own story, we’re gearing up for a very special album release in 2023. Prolific in production, and with releases on other labels like Highlife, Darker than Wax & Boogie Box, his sound encompasses percussive influence from far and wide, yet always true to his bagpiping Highlands origins. This will be a set not to miss.

Closing proceedings we have the unrelenting machine funk of Moroka. Dance floor intensity with that loose swagger and swing we aspire to reference. Mo's forthcoming beat tape promises to be another stand out from a producer who has been refining his sound in recent years with releases on Steven Julien's Apron.

Live visuals and FG X artwork by Halvor Bodin, an acclaimed Norwegian artist/graphic designer and long standing collaborator.

About
10 years of Fine Grains. Oslo, Aberdeen, London, Amsterdam. Far-reaching polyrhythmic sounds true to their local scenes. We keep slowly evolving our vision through an ever-growing group of friends. FG X puts a marker on the 10th year with a selection of label mainstays and future collaborators.Curated by founder Alexander Horne (DJ Uraki Riddim) with Duncan Grant (CAIN) & Rich Jones (Niven Trust) – the compilation has a nod to the trio' & label' Scottish roots. Tracks from Aberdonian T_A_M & Glasgow-based artist Susannah Stark tie illuminate their respective off-kilter patterns with a folk spirit. CAIN hatches a snarling dance floor builder in 'Talas'. Across the North Sea come tracks from skweee boss Beatbully & the enigmatic Center of the Universe – lofi analogue fun with no v-neck seriousness in sight. From fjord funk to the warm rhythmical pads of blanali and the bright uplifting synth-driven 'Whisper' by Lazy H. There are heads down percussive moments too with a new twist from Herman on his myoclonus drum riddims, a teaser for his 3rd EP due in 2023, and a head nodding broken beat number by SP wizard Pursuit Grooves – a long standing friend of the label since her Sonar show way back in 2010! Watch out the Belgiums are coming, D-Nite gives us some of that lowlands rave energy in 'Glistening Dust' – a snappy prelude to his forthcoming 'Echoes EP'. Closing things out, and kicking things off, is the epic 'Glossolalia' by the LA composer Jon Lloyd. An expansive beat-less composition that nods to film scores and floating in space.

SELVPORTRETT I SELFIENS TID

INGRID LYDERSEN LYSTAD

This book focuses on identity, who we want to be, and what we consider essential to convey about ourselves. Eight of Norway’s leading visual artists respond to the question “Who are you?” through their self-portraits.

Ingrid L. Lystad has interviewed Håkon Bleken, Tore Bjørn Skjølsvik, Marianne Heske, Håkon Gullvåg, Lotte Konow Lund, Esther Maria Bjørneboe, Shwan Dler Qaradaki, and Máret Ánne Sara.

Through images and words, the artists explore their identities from various perspectives, sharing what has been particularly significant in shaping who they are today. This is the first book in which Norwegian visual artists share their stories and self-portraits.

Thus, this book is highly relevant and a significant testament to our times.

Rewild The Mountain

Magnificent wild nature provides possibilities for reflection. The film is a result of thoughts and reflections that have come out of years spent in the mountains. Feeling insignificant and small in large nature is humbling and this humbleness we need to take with us in our lives.

Satyricon
Deep calleth upon Deep

This was the first Satyricon album I worked with since Volcano (2002). Before that I did Rebel Extravaganza (1999), Intermezzo II (1999), Nemesis Divina (1996) and The Shadowthrone (1994). This time I came up with the idea of connecting Satyricon with Edvard Munch and we agreed on using this lithography called Dødskyss/The Kiss of Death from 1899. The inner sleeves includes textures from Edvard Munch’s sketchbooks.

This project was designed when I was staying in London.
